Everyone is currently looking at quick and easy ways to save money on their energy bills. Here are a few simple tips to cut costs:

  • Turn appliances off at the plug to save an average of £30 a year.

  • Use plug sockets that can be turned on and off via your phone, to make sure you switch unused appliances off. Alternatively use timer plugs to schedule turning appliances off.

  • Use Smart thermostats, make your heating more efficient by only warming the rooms you use. Smart thermostats know how long it takes to heat your flat, so the rooms can reach your desired temperature when you need it, all operated via your phone.

  • Turn down your thermostat – 50% of energy bills are spent on heating and hot water. By turning your heating down by just one degree could save up to £80 a year.

  • When swapping appliances going for one with a high energy-efficiency. An A+++ washing will on average use £65 less energy than an A+ one over an 11-year lifespan.

  • When you replace your boiler opt for an A-Rated condensing boiler with a programmer, room thermostat and thermostatic radiator controls.

  • Wash clothes at a lower temperature. By washing at 30 degrees rather than 40 degrees can help reduce your energy usage, and if you can cut out one wash cycle per week you’ll save even more.

  • Draught-proof your property, draughts can cause your home to lose warmth. Draught excluders or draught-proofing kits are a good way to help. Seal gaps in floors and skirting boards, insulate your letterbox to help reduce your heating bills.

  • Plastic linings for your windows and foil linings for your radiators retain more heat in your rooms.

Landlords, property managers and residents’ management committees should look to cut energy in communal areas in similar ways.

  • Replace standard lighting with LED lighting or automated lighting which switches off when there is no one in the communal areas, although that requires investment.

  • Check seals on communal area windows.

  • If you are only passing through the communal hallway to reach your flat, does it need to be heated?
